Day 83: Flying

Today's a pretty epic day in the history of flight. On this day in 1927, Charles Lindbergh completed the first transatlantic, nonstop solo flight. Then, in 1932 (the same year Lindbergh, like a dickhead, lost his kid) Amelia Earhart became the first broad to accomplish the same feat (though she did it far less impressively, landing in Ireland, whereas Chuck landed in France).

For today I put together a list of songs about flight. There are a lot of them.

YouTube:
01. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
02. Mr. Mister - Broken Wings
03. REO Speedwagon - Time For Me To Fly
04. Led Zeppelin - Night Flight
05. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Learning to Fly
06. Rolling Stones - Flight 505 (clip @ 2:44)
07. Steve Miller Band - Jet Airliner
08. Bill Conti - Gonna Fly Now
09. R. Kelly - I Believe I Can Fly
10. Frank Sinatra - Come Fly With Me
11. Rush - Fly By Night
12. The Animals - Sky Pilot
13. The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow
14. Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
15. Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away

Day 81: Doo-Wop

Today's genre tour is Doo-Wop, an American pop genre in the 50s and 60s. It's a cool genre because it served as a bridge between gospel and the more stylized R&B that defined the 60s. It's also pretty cool because it was really only commercially viable between 1955 and 1960. I put together a list of songs that weren't all about holding hands and milkshakes and shit (though almost every song in the genre is about walking someone home).

YouTube:
01. Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - Why Do Fools Fall In Love?
002. The Visions - A Teenagers Life
003. Nicky & The Nobles - School Bells
04. Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs - Stay
005. The Videos - Moonglow You Know
06. The Kodaks - Make Believe World (N/A)
007. The Clickettes - Because Of My Best Friend
008. The Matadors - Vengeance
09. The Willows - Church Bells May Ring
10. The Marcels - Blue Moon
11. The Dell Kings - Come Go With Me
012. The Bluenotes - She Is Mine
13. Gene Chandler - Duke of Earl (what a bizarre persona...)
014. The Monotones - Who Wrote The Book of Love?
015. The Bop-Chords - So Why
016. The Corsairs - Smokey Places
017. The Heartbeats - Tormented
018. The Keynotes - I Don't Know
019. The Pelicans - Aurelia
20. The Penguins - Earth Angel

Day 71: Soul/R&B (1)

Well, this week's genre tour is Soul/R&B. Much like I did with the Classic Rock lists, this is going to be more of an R&B Radio play-list. This list is half of a larger list, which will conclude in a week or two.

Note: I draw distinctions between older R&B and newer. Like, Boyz II Men won't share a list with the Temptations. But modern R&B is a genre in itself (which may be a list some day!!!...?)

YouTube:
11. Wilson Pickett - I Found A Love (Cover Only)

Day 49: Charlie Chaplin's Speechless

On this day in 1972, Charlie Chaplin returned to the United States after a nearly 20-year exile on account of McCarthy-era Red Scare politics. Mr. Chaplin (who is best known for his silent-era comedies and physical humor) was labeled a Communist and, after leaving the country in 1952, wasn't allowed return. So he stayed away until the Academy offered him an honorary Oscar in '72.

Originally, I wanted to make a list of songs that effectively use silence. It sounds cool in theory, but I honestly don't know enough about music to make such a list. I'm sure if I had a staff of people it would be a great collaboration.

Instead, I've made a list of instrumental songs. Chaplin made great movies without talking, so I thought a cool tribute would be a list of songs without talking. Granted some of these tracks have a little bit of talking in them, but they are, for the most part, strictly instrumental.

I wanted to have a broad spectrum of musical styles here; and I think I succeeded. There's really a sampling of nearly every genre imaginable. I hope you enjoy! This list would also probably be great for studying (I know I have trouble focusing when there are lyrics going on in the background).

YouTube:
01. Van Halen - Eruption
02. Explosions in the Sky - A Song for Our Fathers
03. Metallica - Orion
04. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - East Hastings
05. Rush - YYZ
06. Bill Conti - Gonna Fly Now
07. Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good
08. Reel Big Fish - Sayonara Senorita
09. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Go Daddy-O!
10. Average White Band - Pick Up The Pieces
11. The Surfaris - Wipe Out
12. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
13. Brian Eno - 1/1
14. Jon Brion - Omni
15. Rjd2 - Ghostwriter
16. J Dilla - Time: The Donuts of the Heart
17. War - City, Country, City (N/A)
18. Outkast (Andre 3000) - My Favorite Things
19. Blues Brothers - Green Onions/Soul Finger (I was originally going to do both, but I found this dual version. The originals can be found HERE and HERE)
20. Miles Davis - Blue In Green

Day 44: Spring's Been Springing

This list is a little late, but still in a respectable timeframe to be relevant. Last Friday was officially the first day of Spring. Today's list is my Spring mix.

Spring is the hardest season to make a list for; and the hardest to make artsy. With Fall and Winter you can work a lot of sad songs into the mix (and coincidentally a lot of emotional music like folk or indie, for example), because they're pretty sad seasons. Summer can also have some darker songs in it, because Summer is hot and mischievous and miserable, not unlike Hell. But Spring, Spring is happy. Spring is the end of sadness and cold and the rebirth of green and vegetation and flowers; not a whole lot to hate here (it's a season for Pop music). Spring is the season in which one falls in love. So the list reflects this.

Seasonal mixes are purely subjective, so don't hate on this list if you have a totally different definition of what constitutes a good Spring song. With that little disclaimer, here's my list. Get Happy!!!

YouTube:
01. The Hush Sound - We Intertwined
02. Catch 22 - Motown Cinderella
03. Billy Joel - Tell Her About It
04. Regina Spektor - Us (She's the best)
05. Ben Folds - Zak and Sara (He's the best)
06. Outkast - Hey Ya! (The best pop song of the new millennium? It could be argued.)
07. The Beatles - Getting Better
08. The Cure - Boys Don't Cry
09. Belle & Sebastian - Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying (Scottish as fuck)
10. Feist - 1234
11. OK Go - Here It Goes Again
12. Smash Mouth - All Star (Oh shit! The Dane Train?!)
13. The Smiths - This Charming Man
14. Tegan & Sara - Back In Your Head (Man, this song is better when you don't have to look at them)
15. Vampire Weekend - Walcott
16. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get
17. Jens Lekman - Kanske Ar Jag Kär I Dig (What a cool version!)
18. Ryan Shaw - We Got Love
19. Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance
20. Prince - Raspberry Beret (N/A, really?!)
21. of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse
22. The Police - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
23. Simon & Garfunkel - 59th St. Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) (Is that a didgeridoo? And some sort of bizarre melodica? It's like a crazy Seuss concert!)
24. Spiral Staircase - More Today Than Yesterday
25. Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday
